In a significant move for the Creator Economy, YouTube has announced that they're lowering the eligibility requirements for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), thereby allowing a broader range of creators to monetise their content on the platform.
The YPP will now be open to creators who have reached a threshold of 500 subscribers, which is half the number that was required previously. Other benchmarks have also been altered, with creators now needing 3,000 valid watch hours instead of 4,000, or 3 million Shorts views as opposed to the previous 10 million. This move is seen as a significant step towards enabling smaller creators to earn from features like paid chat, tipping, channel memberships, and shopping. However, creators will still need to reach the existing YPP requirements for revenue sharing.
These new, lower requirements are set to roll out initially in the US, UK, Canada, Taiwan, and South Korea.
